CAS Releases 10th Edition of Professional Standards Book

May 2019

Founded in 1979, the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) is the pre-eminent force for promoting standards in higher education. CAS creates and delivers dynamic, credible standards, guidelines, and Self-Assessment Guides that are designed to lead to a host of quality programs and services. On the 40th anniversary of our founding, CAS is pleased to announce the publication of the 10th Edition of CAS Professional Standards for Higher Education, a publication that has become a staple for higher education leaders and practitioners.

CAS Standards respond to student needs, the requirements of sound pedagogy, and the effective management of 45 functional areas. Individuals and institutions from over 40 CAS member organizations comprise a constituency of over 115,000 professionals. Representing a significant majority of higher education practitioners in programs and services throughout the country and beyond, CAS provides tools to higher education leaders assessing institutional effectiveness and student learning, development, and success outcomes.

The release of the 10th Edition of CAS Professional Standards for Higher Education and accompanying Self-Assessment Guides (SAGs) marks a critical time in higher education. Since the publication of the 9th Edition of "the Blue Book" and SAGs in 2015, updates to the 10th Edition include:
- a complete overhaul and revision of the CAS General Standards, which reflect common practice across the field of higher education, and form the core of every set of functional area standards
- full revisions of standards for 21 functional areas, and the addition of one new functional area
- updated Self-Assessment Guides (SAGs), which reflect new suggested evidence, rating scales, and integrate CAS guidelines into the assessment tool

The 10th Edition of CAS Professional Standards for Higher Education was edited by Jennifer B. Wells (Kennesaw State University) and Noah Henry-Darwish (University of California, Berkeley), with staff support from Ben Wentworth (Georgia Gwinnett College). Laura S. Dahl (The Ohio State University) designed the cover and layout for the book. The 10th Edition is dedicated in memory of former CAS Executive Director Marybeth Drechsler Sharp.

CAS materials are now available in our online store (https://www.cas.edu/store_home.asp). For more information, please contact us at executive_director@cas.edu
